Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States. It’s a broad term that covers a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, and while chest pain is the classic symptom, it’s not the only warning sign to watch for.

Some symptoms can be easy to miss, especially when they show up in unexpected ways like swelling, jaw pain, or extreme fatigue. Recognizing these signs early can be critical for your health and even save your life.

Here are 10 important symptoms that could signal heart trouble:

1. Chest Pain, Pressure, or Discomfort

A heavy, squeezing, or burning sensation in the center of your chest is often a hallmark of heart problems. The discomfort may also spread to your arms, shoulders, back, neck, or jaw. It can feel constant or come and go. Never ignore chest pain, especially if it’s new or worsening.

2. Pain in Arms, Neck, Jaw, Back, or Upper Abdomen

Sometimes heart-related pain shows up in surprising places. Discomfort in one or both arms, the neck, jaw, back, or the upper part of the belly can indicate heart disease, even without any chest pain.

3. Unexplained Sweating

Breaking out in a cold sweat without physical exertion could be a serious sign. If it’s paired with chest discomfort or nausea, seek medical help immediately.

4. Swelling in Ankles, Feet, or Legs

When the heart isn’t pumping effectively, blood can back up in the veins, leading to fluid buildup in the lower limbs. Persistent swelling can be an early warning of heart failure.

5. Extreme, Unexplained Fatigue

Feeling unusually tired, even after a good night’s sleep or a normal day, can be an early and often overlooked symptom, especially in women. If fatigue hits you out of nowhere, it’s worth discussing with your doctor.

6. Rapid or Irregular Heartbeats (Palpitations)

Feeling like your heart is racing, fluttering, or skipping beats can sometimes be harmless, but frequent or prolonged episodes could be a sign of an underlying heart condition.

7. Swollen Belly (Ascites)

A noticeable buildup of fluid in the abdomen can point to more advanced heart issues. It may be accompanied by discomfort, bloating, or shortness of breath.

8. Blue or Gray Skin (Cyanosis)

A bluish tint to your lips, fingers, or toes means your body isn’t getting enough oxygen. This is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention.

9. Shortness of Breath

If everyday activities, like walking up the stairs or light exercise, suddenly leave you gasping for air, your heart might not be pumping blood efficiently. Shortness of breath can also occur while lying down, another serious warning sign.

10. Dizziness or Lightheadedness

Feeling faint, dizzy, or lightheaded can happen when your heart isn’t delivering enough blood to the brain. This could mean a heart rhythm problem or even the early stages of a heart attack.

Catching heart problems early gives you a better chance at effective treatment — and a longer, healthier life. If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t brush them off. Schedule a check-up with your doctor right away.
