The Memphis Zoo is celebrating a monumental achievement after being crowned the second-best zoo in the country by Newsweek’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards. This recognition shows the zoo’s unwavering commitment to exceptional animal care, exhibits, educational programs, and conservation efforts.

From humble beginnings in April 1906 with a mere $1,200 in funding from the Memphis Park Commission, the zoo has blossomed into an excellent attraction. Today, the Memphis Zoo has an impressive collection of over 3,500 animals representing 500 species, attracting a staggering 1.2 million visitors annually.

Beyond providing entertainment, the Memphis Zoo is deeply dedicated to wildlife conservation. With a focused approach on six conservation efforts – Sumatran tigers, Sri Lankan biodiversity, Dusky Gopher frogs, Louisiana pine snakes, Grauer’s (Eastern Lowland) gorillas, and African elephants – the zoo is at the forefront of saving these precious creatures and habitats.

Educational initiatives are also a cornerstone of the Memphis Zoo’s mission. From Zoo Camp, where children learn about endangered species, to Zoo classes offering in-depth exploration of animal relationships and ecological interdependence, the zoo fosters a new generation of animal lovers. Zoo Labs, where children can engage in hands-on activities like dissection, provide an unforgettable learning experience.

The zoo’s commitment to engaging the community extends beyond daylight hours. The enchanting Zoo Lights display transforms the park into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, complete with ice skating. Additionally, the current Dino Park offers visitors a thrilling journey back in time to explore prehistoric creatures.

The Memphis Zoo isn’t just an impressive collection of animals, but it’s a testament to the vision, dedication, and hard work of countless people. This well-deserved recognition as the second-best zoo in the nation highlights Memphis’s commitment to providing exceptional wildlife experiences and education.
