Depression rates have steadily grown throughout the years. In 2023, Gallup reported that at least 29% of Americans have been diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. In 2015, it was only 19.6 percent.

With unlimited access to the internet, an average screen time of  7 hours a day for adults, and a dependent relationship with your phone, it’s no wonder depression rates have increased. Screen time is a predictor for depressive symptoms, as reported by the National Library of Medicine. Instead of being dependent on your phone, try being dependent on nature.

“It’s just the importance of playing outside, the importance of public parks and spaces that just give a critical access to nature and air and green spaces and blue spaces just gives a break from the, you know, from the stresses of life,” said Angie Whitfield, the Marketing and Communications Senior Manager for Shelby Farms Park.

Shelby Farms Park, as Angie suggests, is the perfect escape. A stroll around the lake offers a chance to de-stress and reconnect with the natural world. Biking along a scenic trail provides a more active option, while a peaceful paddle on the lake brings a sense of tranquility. These activities cater to different preferences and highlight the range of benefits nature provides.

“There’re studies that have been done that show being outside with access to fitness and nature just gives such obvious benefits to physical and emotional and social well-being,” Angie said. “And it reduces rates of diabetes and heart disease.”

Beyond the physical, nature offers a haven for emotional and social well-being. Immersing yourself in a green space provides a natural break from the constant stimulation of technology and daily life. This disconnection allows for a sense of calm and clarity, promoting better mental health. Additionally, spending time outdoors with friends or family provides social connection and creates lasting memories.

Stepping outside, disconnecting from technology, and simply being present in nature can significantly improve overall well-being. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or a bike ride on a trail, make a conscious effort to incorporate nature into your routine. You might be surprised at how much better you feel.
