We’ve lost the reason for the holiday season. With today’s technology and social media culture, the meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas has changed. These holidays were once about gratitude, kindness, and spreading joy. Now, they’re about crafting the perfect decor aesthetic to guarantee a viral haul on TikTok or making the most Instagrammable holiday recipes.
Posting on social media can be fun, but it’s important to recognize that social media posts are glamorized versions of reality. They aren’t always real, and many people don’t even have the privilege of living an ordinary life. \
Unplug for a moment and reflect on the blessings and advantages in your life, recognizing that not everyone shares those same privileges. This season, let’s set aside posting holiday aesthetics and instead focus on giving to those less fortunate. So here are 5 ways to give back to our Memphis community and embrace the true reason for the season:
1. Mid-South Food Bank
The Mid-South Food Bank’s mission is to eliminate hunger across the South, and they are the leading food distributor in Memphis. The Mid-South Food bank delivers nutritious and wholesome food to local agencies and distribution centers across 31 counties. There are many volunteer opportunities with the food bank like sorting, packing, and distributing, but you can also donate to the organization.
2. St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen
St. Mary’s Catholic Church has been serving the community’s less fortunate continuously since 1870. They serve nutritious food to those in need six times a week. You can volunteer to serve and prepare food, or you can donate food, money, or cleaning products to the organization.
3. Community Alliance for the Homeless (CAFTH)
CAFTH is a nonprofit organization that offers strategic planning, technical support, and service coordination to both public and private organizations dedicated to ending homelessness in Memphis. CAFTH is currently collecting hygiene kits, survival items, and snacks like trail mix, soap, socks, and more to take tangible action in supporting the homeless and addressing their immediate needs.
4. Memphis Sheriff’s & Police Activity League (Memphis Shelby PAL)
Memphis Shelby PAL is a non-profit youth mentoring organization that prevents crime, promotes success, and builds character for children 5 to 18 years old. You can volunteer as a mentor, guiding mentees to grow in knowledge, confidence, character, and etiquette. These skills, developed in a fun and safe sports environment, help set them up for lifelong success. There are other volunteer opportunities with the organization like concessions, cleaning crews, event support, and more!
5. World Relief Memphis
World Relief Memphis supports refugees who have been forced—or have made the heartbreaking decision—to leave their homes. After enduring years of violence, famine, and severe poverty, these individuals long for a safe place where they can finally rebuild and make a new home. Volunteer opportunities include interpreting for refugees, cooking a welcome meal, assisting refugees with job applications and resumes, and so much more. World Relief Memphis also accepts donations.

By prioritizing compassion and understanding, we can help create a safer, more inclusive community for everyone.
This holiday season, let’s come together to support those in need and rekindle the spirit of giving. Remember, even small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to contribute as well.
