May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to opening up the conversation, breaking the stigma, and reminding ourselves—and each other—that mental health is health. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, stress, or just the weight of everyday life, this month is a powerful reminder: you are not alone.

In Memphis and across the country, this awareness campaign is about more than green ribbons and inspirational quotes. It’s about real people, real struggles, and real support.

Why Mental Health Awareness Month Matters

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed to increase understanding of mental health conditions and highlight the importance of access to care. The statistics show how common these challenges are:

    • One in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year
    • More than 50% of Americans will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lives
    • Despite these numbers, stigma keeps many people silent and suffering alone

This month encourages open conversations, greater empathy, and a renewed focus on what it means to be well.

Mental Health Is For Everyone

You don’t have to be in crisis to care about your mental health. Small, daily practices can make a big difference. Mental wellness might look like:

    • Saying no to things that drain you
    • Prioritizing sleep and rest
    • Taking breaks from social media
    • Moving your body in a way that feels good
    • Journaling, meditating, or sitting quietly
    • Reaching out to someone you trust
    • Seeing a therapist or counselor

It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to ask for help.
